  • Military Child Education Coalition (MCEC):  The mission of MCEC is to ensure inclusive, quality educational opportunites for all military-connected children affected by mobility, transition, deployments and family separation.
  • Military Interstate Children’s Compact Commission: The Compact provides information addressing key educational transition issues encountered by millitary families including enrollment, placement, attendance, eligibility and graduation.
  • Military One Source: A central hub and go-to-place for the military community. Provides information about military benefits, deployments, reintegration, moves, parenthood, retirement and more.
  • American Red Cross: Emergency comunication for military families, financial assistance, referral services, deployment support and services.
  • Veteran Crisis Line: Connects veterans in crisis and their families and friends with qualified, caring Department of Veterans Affairs responders through confidential toll-free hotline, online chat, or text. Veterans and their loved ones can call 1-800-273-8255 and Press 1, chat online, or send a text message to 838255 to recieve confidential support 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Support for deaf and hard of hearing individuals is avaliable.
  • March2Success: Online study materials to help improve scores on standarized tests such as state exit exams, college entrance exams, military entrance exam (ASVAB) and others. Content includes self-paced study programs in Math, English and Science, with a focus on materials for grades 8-12.
  • National Military Family Association:  Provides information and resources related to services and programs for military families.
  • Our Military Kids: A 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization created to provide support (grants) and recognition to military children. Grants pay for participation in activites that help children cope with stress and anxiety while their parents are recovering or absent.
  • Real Warriors:  A multimedia public awareness campaign designed to encourage help-seeking behavior among service members, veterans and military families coping with invisible wounds.
  • Military Impacted Schools Association:  A national organization of school superintendents with a higher concentration of military students. Provides useful links for military families and educator resources.
  • Tutor.com:  All K-12 children of U.S. Military families; active duty, reserve or in the National Guard, are eligible to receive one-on-one academic support 24/7 in math, science, English and more, regardless of the service member’s branch or deployment status at no cost. This valuable academic benefit is funded by the Department of Defense MWR Library Program, the Yellow Ribbon Reintegration Program and the Navy General Library Program.

PHS Receives Tennessee Purple Star School Award

The Military Interstate Children’s Compact Commission (MIC3) Tennessee is very pleased to announce that Peabody High School has been awarded the Tennessee Purple Star School Award (PSSA). Peabody High School was one of ten schools in the state to receive this award.

The Tennessee Purple Star School Award was designed to highlight military-friendly schools that show a major commitment to serving students and families connected to our nation’s military. Awardees receive a special recognition to display in their buildings. A school must reapply every two years to maintain the recognition status.

Schools are eligible for the award if they have a point of contact within the school that has completed a professional development component specific to the needs of military connected students. The school website must contain a page that provides resources for military families. The school then chooses an additional activity that aligns with the school’s population and goals. For families, the designation will help guide them to schools that have supports in place.

In November 2019, the Military Interstate Children’s Compact Commission (MIC3) Tennessee, opened applications for the Tennessee Purple Star School Award. The award is designed to recognize military-friendly schools in Tennessee. Children in military families experience many challenges: transfers to multiple schools, adapting to new environments or a parent deployed to a war zone.

Military connected children have needs that are different from other students. The compact addresses the key educational transition issues encountered by military families including enrollment, placement, attendance, eligibility and graduation. The compact was adopted by all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Tennessee adopted the compact in 2011. Tennessee has 2,095 active duty military and 18,206 reserve members. The Purple Star School Award aligns with the components in the Military Interstate Compact.
